How to change the image of public housing? Public housing in the United States has been undergoing a serious crisis, and is currently in a precarious state. It is common to see bad examples of public housing highlighted in popular culture, but not as common to see the good examples. In order to create a different, more positive discourse around public housing, it is vital to learn the conditions of successful public and social housing projects both in the US and in other parts of the world. It will surprise most people how common public housing is, beyond the concept of “projects” and brutalist structures that have been condemned as eyesores in most cities. They are around us. For this purpose, a deck of cards was created collectively by the Fall 2023 Master’s Research Studio class that includes not only the redrawn graphics of the buildings, but also a set of six index values that allow for comparisons between them.

Description and Analysis of Index Values fro 30 Housing Projects Cards. Edited by Emmanuel Osorno.
The result is a cultural object that serves beyond the design and architecture community: a social tool to inform and critique the examples that surround us, a database of precedents for students, and an informative -portable- device of housing standards and their impact on the different cultures, ecosystems, and communities they serve around the world.
