FUN-DACO VENEZIA

Playthings to assemble and disassemble.

ROLE: DESIGNER
FOR: UNIVERSITÀ IUAV DI VENEZIA
STATUS: COMPLETED

FUN-daco was born as a proposal to bring together both locals and tourists of the historic city of Venice, taking the pressure away from the massively frequented places. The name comes from fondamenta, a Venetian word to mark a passage between a canal or waterway and buildings. The international team involved in this project brought together architecture students from Italy, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Serbia, and Peru, creating diverse and enriched outlooks and proposals. This involvement makes it possible to rediscover and establish human bonds.

The choice of Venice as a project location represents our virtual union, not only as a W.A.Ve, but also as a training center: Venice, in fact, is for us an essential component of our cultural and human growth. Campo dei Tolentini, in particular, is a place where each of us has lived and met new people. At the same time, however, it is a place that we have been deprived of and we try to reclaim.  We base this project off of our own experiences in order to be able to encourage the social interactions of the community.

Venice has long been confronted with flows of tourists. On the one hand, unsustainable tourism guarantees the survival of the inhabitants, but on the other, it destroys the city. Our reflection aims to integrate visitors within Venice in order to be able to propose a new tourist.

Young people can play an active role in the rebirth and integration of the city. We have therefore chosen to promote Venice as an open and lively place according to the following initiatives: sharing of books, performances (theater, dance, readings) and cinema. This way, the FUN-daco space becomes a welcoming place even for lonely elderly people who, on the one hand, can share their adventures, and on the other hand, can be helped by the youngest in using technology.

Array of possibilities: some of the activities that can be done within the structure.

The joint allows the union of the various wooden parts. We have chosen to use the same joint and the same material for the structure and furniture.

By attaching the grid to the surroundings, the public space integrates with the interior of the buildings. These “grid-rooms” are functional as niches for shows, restaurants and bars - all activities usually carried out on the ground floor, now raised and dispersed.
